Methamphetamine, or meth, is a powerful stimulant that can make you feel more awake and active. HHS, through SAMHSA, is announcing several grant opportunities totaling $46.8 million and cover a broad range of behavioral health priorities for the agency.

Rats voluntarily drink 10% EtOH over 28 days

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), meth is a Schedule II substance under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) because it has potential medical uses, but it can be very addictive and harmful. Stimulants like meth release a lot of dopamine into the brain, making the user feel good, boosting energy, and leading to paranoia or hallucinations in large doses. Meth conceals the user’s perception of drunkenness, so meth users who drink will often continue to do so far beyond a safe or normal amount. Because meth stimulates the user, some people may seek to combine it with alcohol to decrease its effects and create a feeling of balance. The idea that large amounts of alcohol will depress the side effects of meth via binge drinking can seem to produce a sense of control to hide or mask meth abuse. Just as some people with diabetes or asthma may have flare-ups of their disease, a relapse to drinking can be seen as a temporary setback to full recovery and not a complete failure.

Research studies even suggest that meth and alcohol, when taken together, impair spatial memory. The combination of the two substances is especially damaging to the brain development of unborn babies. The newer types of these medications work by offsetting changes in the brain caused by AUD. Due to the anonymous nature of mutual-support groups, it is difficult for researchers to determine their success rates compared with those led by health professionals. For instance, your heart rate may speed up, slow down, and then speed up again, because your body metabolizes each drug at different rates. These rapid changes can put a lot of strain on your body, to the point where you need emergency medical attention.

The effects of alcohol contribute to the sensations of a meth high, but the primary goal is to extend the high. The effects of alcohol on metabolism by the liver and hepatotoxicity are well-established. Similarly, we have reported that Meth also produces evidence of hepatotoxicity (Halpin and Yamamoto 2012). Thus, any interactive effects between EtOH and Meth may be due to their combined toxicity to the liver. However, voluntary EtOH drinking did not produce overt evidence of hepatotoxicity or alterations in ALT or AST (unpublished findings) and Meth concentrations in the brain were not changed by prior EtOH exposure.

If you inject meth with a needle, you also have a higher risk of contracting bloodborne viruses like hepatitis C. In everyday language, that means most of the meth will leave your system before the day is done. Some folks may do a “run,” which involves taking meth continuously for several hours or days, often without sleeping or eating.
